Pack 8 is Part of the Boy Scouts of America

Pack 8 is part of a longer than 100-year old tradition. Consider that when the Boy Scouts of America (of which Cub Scouting is a part) was founded, there were only 46 states in the US; William Howard Taft was President; and the Red Sox still played at the Huntington Avenue Grounds -- Fenway Park was still two years from opening! We are proud of the long history of The Boy Scouts of America (BSA) and equally proud to involve Dracut's boys in continuing its traditions and creating new history.

There have been over 105 million scouts in that long history. There are approximately 4.5 million scouts in uniform today. Any organization that has served so many for so long needs a strong administrative system.
The BSA has organized itself into 294 local councils to provide direct oversight, support, and assistance to its units. The Yankee Clipper Council is responsible for scouting in northern Massachusetts from the Lowell area to the seacoast, and for several towns in southern New Hampshire. The council is staffed by a small team of paid staff as well as volunteers. They are responsible for coordinating administrative, financial, insurance, marketing, training, and property management duties as the "owners" of the council's camp's at Wah-Tut-Ca and Lone Tree. The individual scout and his parents are most familiar with council through its coordination of the Summer Camping program.

In order to better maintain contact with each unit, the Council is organized into Districts. Pack 8 is served by the staff of the Westwind District, which includes a single paid District Executive and an otherwise all-volunteer staff. Our Commissioner is our direct link to the staff and she ensures that we are in compliance with scouting policies and expectations as well as provides us with information and support to provide a high quality program to your sons. The District directly services the Pack by coordinating local activities such as District Pinewood Derbies and camporees. They provide training to the Pack and Den Leadership and support and encourage the programs we provide to the boys.

Pack 8 is Chartered by Dracut's Centralville Sportsmens Club. The Chartered Organization has agreed to support us as we deliver scouting to the boys of this town. All of the Pack leadership are volunteers. Our "Top Scouter" is the Cubmaster, who coordinates the Pack's activities and ensures that the boys are given a great variety of opportunities for growth, discovery, and education. Each of the Pack's Dens is led by a parent volunteer. These leaders provide the direct instruction to the Cub Scouts. The Cubmaster is supported by the Pack Committee, who manage the paperwork, handle the finances, arrange for scout recognition, and otherwise support his efforts. Every adult leader in a Pack is a volunteer and the Pack relies upon the involvement of parents to constantly refresh that talent pool. The turnover of staff directly correlates to the number of boys graduating from the Cub program at the end of any given year. On average, Pack 8 will lose between 6 and 15 years of Scout Leadership experience each year, which is why we ask parents to step up to support and enrich their sons' scouting experience.

Please note: The BSA is committed to youth safety and ensuring that every youth has a positive experience in Scouting. Before assigning an adult to a leadership position, a background check and Youth Protection Training is required.

Boy Scout Troops

Pack 8 Webelos have graduated to these local Boy Scout Troops:

Troop 7          Troop 25          Troop 80          Troop 83

Our boys and their parents are in leadership roles in most of these Troops.
We are often invited to train and camp with them by our Alumni, which is a tremendous advantage for our current members.
