Being An Involved Parent Makes the Pack Go

Cub Scouts is a parent run organization. That means if no parents step up to help, there is no Cub Scout program. Don't just think "I've got so many things going on right now, I just can't volunteer. Someone else can do it." Everyone is busy, but everyone can find a way to contribute. Don't look at being involved as an obligation you want to avoid, but instead as an opportunity to take an active role in making a worthwhile program for your Scout and the other youth. The Cub Scout years are developing years for youth, falling between the dependence of early childhood and the relative independence of early adolescence. Being involved in Scouting as a parent provides a positive way for parents and children to grow closer together, so make the most of the opportunity to be involved in these formative years.

Some specific things you can do to help your Cub Scout are:
  • Work with your Scout on service projects
  • Help your Cub Scout along the advancement trail and promptly mark completed items in Scoutbook
  • Complete additional elective adventures as a family, beyond those done at Den and Pack meetings
  • Participate in monthly pack meetings and twice-monthly den meetings
  • Attend Pack committee meetings
  • Go on family campouts with your Scout
  • Provide constructive feedback to Den and Pack leaders
  • Provide support for your Scout's Den leader in running meetings/events
  • Look for opportunities to take a larger role in planning and executing the Scouting program

There are a number of official roles that need to be filled by one or more parents:
  • Committee Chair
  • Cubmaster
  • Assistant Cumbaster
  • Pack Secretary
  • Pack Treasurer
  • Den Leader (at least one per den)
  • Popcorn Kernel (Fundraising Chair)
  • Outings Chair
  • New Member Coordinator
  • Quartermaster
  • Advancement Chair
  • Pack Trainer
  • Pack Historian

Additionally, there are numerous opportunities to be involved that don't come with a position title and long term commitment. For example, there are a number of specific events that the Pack participates in. Volunteering to take the lead one just a single event can make a big difference.
