Cub Scouting — Fun and Lots More!

CubScoutLogoIn 1930, the Boy Scouts of America created a new opportunity called Cub Scoutingfor boys younger than Boy Scout age.

A year-round, home-centered program used by chartered organizations, Cub Scouting emphasizes involvement between boys and their parents, adult leaders, and friends.

In the multidimensional plan of the Boy Scouts of America, Cub Scouting is where it all begins. Currently, it is the largest of the organization’s four membership divisions (The others are Boy Scouting, Venturing, and Learning for Life.)

The Des Plaines Valley Council’s Cub Scout program currently serves nearly 6,000 boys in the first through fifth grades (or ages 6 through 10). Cub Scouting combines fun with educational activities and lifelong values.

Research conducted by Louis Harris & Associates in 1997 indicates that one year in the Cub Scout program provides a healthy, safe environment in which boys learn important values and develop and self-confidence. The research also indicates that the program provides a forum in which parents and sons spend quality time together going places, doing projects, talking, and reading. For more information about this study of the Cub Scout program, contact the council service center.
