Junior Service Project Ideas


Service Projects for Girl Scout Juniors
In Girl Scouting, service means doing something helpful without asking for or expecting a reward.  Through service projects, Girl Scout Juniors can have fun, learn new skills and information and provide assistance to others.
At this age level:
1.  Projects are longer in duration varying from a few hours to a few months.
2.  Projects should teach girls the job of giving without expecting anything in return.
3.  Project should teach girls about the varying backgrounds and conditions of people.
4.  Projects should involve troop time more than troop money.
5.  Projects can be related to badges the girls have earned.
6.  Projects should be ones the girls want to do and should be fun.
Service Project Ideas for Girl Scout Juniors
1.  Do a flag ceremony to open a Girl Scout or community (PTA, Rotary, City Council) meeting.
2.  Make toys, games or crafts for a Head Start program site or pediatric unit of a hospital.
3.  Help your sister Girl Scout Brownie troop to learn basic camping skills.
4.  Collect clothing and donate it to a charity that serves the homeless.
5.  Assist a community agency by wrapping holiday gifts for needy families.
6.  Adopt an adult who is physically and/or developmentally challenged and provide companionship, assistance with activities that promote independent living and/or
     opportunities for quality leisure activities.
7.  Plan and set up a wildlife conservation exhibit at school, community center, or council camp property.
8.  Help build a nature trail and conduct guided tours to teach Girl Scouts and others the value of wildlife.
9.  Build and install bird baths in the summer.
10.  Plan a program with a day care center or nursery school. Give a puppet show, share a treat, read stories, play games, or make things together.
11.  Put together various “dress-up” costumes for children at a day care center, church school or kindergarten. Take pictures of your new “stars.”
12.  Baby-sit so parents may vote on election day or attend a Girl Scout event.
13.  Adopt a senior citizen in your neighborhood or who is a resident in a local nursing home.  Visit them, and remember them at birthday and holiday times.
14.  Decorate the lounge or dining room of a community center, senior center, convalescent hospital, etc.
15.  Promote engraving valuables to discourage theft. Contact your local law enforcement agency or city hall for engraving pens.
16.  Do clerical tasks such as stuffing envelopes, collating papers or putting together packets for your Girl Scout council or other community organizations.
17.  Help with a community fair.
18.  Assist with a restoration of a historic landmark.
19.  Develop and participate in a Girl Scout and senior citizen “Pen Pal” program.
20.  Make therapeutic toys for children who are physically and/or developmentally challenged.
21.  Start a recycling center to recycle newspapers, aluminum cans, bottles, etc.
22.  Conduct a bicycle safety program for a Girl Scout Daisy or Brownie troop.
23.  Plan and carry out the entertainment for a leader recognition event.
24.  Accept the responsibility for cooking meals for your family for one day.
25.  Sew an afghan or blanket for a needy person or family.
26.  Decorate the fellowship hall of a church for a religious holiday or observance.
27.  Act as usher for a community theater.
28.  Participate in a holiday program at a church or synagogue.
29.  Assist with a Girl Scout Daisy or Brownie troop in your service unit.
30.  Help to clean benches or trails at a park.

Service Projects for Girl Scout Cadettes, Seniors and Ambassadors

Service projects for Girl Scout Cadettes, Seniors and Ambassadors are an invitation for young women to have fun, expand friendships, increase their skills and competence, and give to their communities.
At this age level:
1.  Projects may be done by individuals, by a few young women working together, or by a larger group.
2.  Projects involve young women in meaningful activity in areas they choose to explore.
3.  Projects allow young women to take on an even greater level of responsibility for initiation, planning, implementation and evaluation of the service given.
4.  Projects should provide the opportunity for young women to utilize or be trained in specific skills and then to demonstrate their own potential.
5.  Projects provide expanded opportunities for young women to invite others in the community to work with them in Girl Scouting.
6.  Projects offer insight into possible careers.
7.  Projects provide increased multicultural exposure and appreciation.
8.  Projects should be broad enough to include many different tasks.
9.  Projects should be longer (six months to a year) or done on a regular basis. Service Project Ideas for Girl Scout Cadettes, Seniors and Ambassadors:
10.  Volunteer as a tutor in a literary project.
12.  Volunteer your services at your local public broadcasting radio or television station.
13.  Serve as a volunteer in a public or school library.
14.  Help a community theater group, opera society or dance company.
15.  Share your talent in the visual, performing or literary arts by teaching others in a community center, day care center, settlement house, camp or other facility.
16.  Start or volunteer for a SADD (Students Against Drunk Driving) Club Friday Night live, or a Club Live group!
17.  Start or volunteer for a “Say No to Drugs” Club.
18.  Become a certified lifeguard and volunteer to serve as a lifeguard for Girl Scout groups who are participating in water related activities.
19.  Help plan and establish a safe route for joggers and/or cyclists or publicize already existing routes.
20.  Plan and coordinate a Girl Scout “uniform bank” for your service unit.
21.  Organize a baby sitting service for Girl Scout volunteers who need to attend Girl Scout training events or meetings.
22.  Work with a local school to organize a group of peer tutors or peer counselors.
23.  Develop and carry out a fitness program for children.
24.  Organize a community/neighborhood block association.
25.  Contact Girl Scout council and volunteers to cleanup Girl Scout property trails.

26.  Participate in National Trails Day held annually in June to develop and maintain local foot trails.

40.  Make speeches or presentations to community groups about Girl Scouting.

At this age level:
1.  Projects allow girls to stretch their understanding beyond their family and troop into a wider world.
2.  Projects should teach girls the job of giving of themselves rather than giving things.
3.  Projects should teach girls to be sensitive to the feelings and needs of others and how to respond to these needs.
4.  Projects should be short-term as Girl Scout Brownies have a short interest span.
5.  Projects should be relatively simple.
6.  Projects should be within the Girl Scout Brownie’s neighborhood or local community.
7.  Projects are often an element of a Girl Scout Brownie Try-It.
Service Project Ideas for Girl Scout Brownies
1.  Adopt a neighborhood senior citizen and help with necessary chores.
2.  Do secret Girl Scout Brownies deeds for members of your family or friends.
3.  Adopt a homebound person and visit often.
4.  Make tray favors, scrapbooks, napkin rings or crafts for children in hospitals.
5.  Plan or cooperate with existing paper drives or other recycling endeavors.
6.  Plant a tree or shrub at your troop meeting site on Arbor Day (last Friday of April).
7.  Visit a nursing home and sing or put on a play for residents.
8.  Collect canned goods for local food banks.
9.  Donate money to Juliette Low World Friendship Fund.
10. Make greeting cards for people in a veteran’s hospital or other healthcare facility.
11.  Make bird feeders for a local park or nature center.
12.  Participate in the adopt-a-pet program at a zoo.
13.  Adopt a service person stationed overseas. Collect useful items and send a gift box during a holiday when they cannot be home with their family.

At this age level:
1.  Service is synonymous with friendship and can occur at every meeting in a small way.
2.  Large service projects can be carried out in partnership with Girl Scout Brownie troops.
3.  Projects should be reasonable and provide an experience that is meaningful to the girl.
4.  Projects should be very simple.
5.  Projects should be of short duration as Girl Scout Daisies have short attention spans.
6.  Projects should encourage learning more about Girl Scouting and bridging.
Service Project Ideas for Girl Scout Daisies
1.  Visit home bound family member(s) or friends and listen to and share favorite stories.
2.  Take care of family pets.
3.  Hand out flowers or programs during a Girl Scout or community event.
4.  Plant flowers to beautify troop meeting place.
5.  Collect toys or books for needy children.
6.  Bring Girl Scout cookies to senior citizen center.
7.  Sing songs with children or adults who are hospitalized.
8.  Make a poster to tell others about Girl Scouting and give it to the service unit organizer.
9.  Plan a celebration for a sister Girl Scout Brownie troop.
10.  Help with a service unit bridging event.
11.  Hand out bulletins at a synagogue or church on Girl Scout Sabbath/Sunday.
12.  Help a Girl Scout Brownie troop plan and carry out a family picnic or cookout.
13.  Help a Girl Scout Brownie troop plan and carry out a Mother's Day or Father's Day party for residents in a nursing home or convalescent center.
